Free Trailer Bill of Sale Template

A trailer bill of sale records a utility, horse, livestock, boat or travel trailer changing hands: the trailer, the price, the date, and the people signing. For a travel trailer or a fifth wheel there is also the RV bill of sale, with lines for generator hours and the appliances sold with it.

This page covers the template and two federal rules that touch it. It does not cover titling or registration of trailers. Where we could confirm a state's rules for selling a trailer, that state's trailer page is listed under Trailer Bill of Sale rules by state below, with its sources. This site's vehicle state pages, listed on the vehicle bill of sale page, are written for selling a car, truck or van.

Why there is no odometer section

The federal odometer disclosure rule exempts a vehicle that is not self-propelled (49 CFR 580.17). A trailer that is not self-propelled is exempt, so this template has no odometer section.

The vehicle bill of sale has odometer lines, and explains the rule and its other exemptions.

The VIN

The federal rules on vehicle identification numbers list trailers among the vehicles they apply to (49 CFR 565.2). The template has a line for the VIN or serial number.

What to write about the trailer

The template has a line for each of these, so the trailer can be told apart from any other.

  • Year, make and model
  • The type of trailer, for example utility, boat, travel or livestock
  • VIN or serial number
  • License plate number and title number, if the trailer has them
  • Its condition, as the seller describes it

Frequently asked questions

Does a trailer bill of sale need an odometer reading?

The federal odometer disclosure rule exempts a vehicle that is not self-propelled (49 CFR 580.17). A trailer that is not self-propelled is exempt, so this template has no odometer section. This page does not cover state rules for trailers.

Does the trailer template have lines for a title number and a plate number?

Yes, for a trailer that has them. Where we could confirm a state's titling rules for trailers, that state's trailer page, listed under Trailer Bill of Sale rules by state on this page, says so and links to the source. This page does not cover titling or registration of trailers.

Can a boat and its trailer be sold on one bill of sale?

The boat bill of sale has lines for a trailer sold with the boat, so one document can list both. This template is for a trailer sold on its own.
