What's different in Indiana
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles says the certificate of title must be applied for within 45 days after the vehicle is purchased or otherwise acquired. Its fee chart lists $15 to issue, duplicate or replace a title, and other title fees, among them a $30 administrative penalty for late title. Except for the vehicles IC 9-17-2-6 lists, Indiana law requires the application to contain the odometer reading of the vehicle, in miles or kilometers, as of the date of sale or transfer. The BMV says sales tax is paid on the purchase price when a vehicle is purchased in Indiana, and that after a private purchase it is paid when the Indiana certificate of title is applied for. When ownership of a registered vehicle is transferred, other than from a manufacturer or a licensed dealer, IC 9-18.1-4-6 says the registration of the vehicle expires and the person transferring ownership “shall remove the license plate and certificate of registration from the vehicle.”
The BMV publishes a bill of sale form of its own, State Form 44237, and a blank vehicle bill of sale is on this page as well.
